Having 2 children and no dedicated sewing space has greatly increased my need to plan and prep and attack methodicly. It took almost a month of cutting when I could find the time to get enought pieces for a twin and queen sized Crayon Box Quilt. I am using the instructions from Bonnie Hunter at Quiltville. My personal modifications are no sashings or borders. My husband is pushing for reversible! So we will see. This is a very scrappy and fun pattern.

So far I have been able to sew as much as can be sewn before pressing seams, and have started adding to my foundations. Big sis is excited for her new blanket! She is wanting a pink blanket, so the back will probably be a pink Crafty Chloe print I have enough yardage of. I have a million ideas on how to quilt it rolling in my head, as well as ideas for a few baby quilts I want to make for sweet babies yet to be born to my friends.
1/4 cup coconut oil, melted, I used unrefined for the coconut smell and flavor

4 cups all-purpose or bread flour

1/4 cup sugar

1 tsp salt

1 1/4 tsp active dry yeast

oil for frying, I use coconut oil

sugar for coating the doughnuts, if you like

Equipment: parchment paper and a sharp cutter. I used this one. Rolling pin, and a pot deep enough to fry in. A stand mixer is very helpful.

Place all the dry ingredients in the bowl of your mixer, make a little dip for the liquid ingredients, then dump those in on top. (Your choice to proof the yeast by letting it sit in the water first or dumping it with the dry stuff). Using the dough hook let it run on the lowest setting for about 10 minutes. It will manage to get all the crumbly bits from the bottom of the bowl in this time.

Cover it and let it rise until doubled. If you are impatient like me, you will still have delicious donuts to eat if they don't get a full rise. They will have a more cake-like consistency.

Once it has risen as much as you can stand it to, its time to roll it out. Working with half the dough on a well floured surface, roll it out to about 1/2 inch thickness, then cut out as many donuts and extra holes as you can. Place your cut pieces on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper. Do this with all the dough.

Time for the second rise! Take your tray with your donuts and parchment and pop it into the oven. Turn it on for 1-2 minutes, but not more than five, then turn it off. pull them out when your oil is ready to go.

I used unrefined coconut oil, and you want a medium low heat. A donut hole should sizzle when you drop it in gently, but not brown immediately. If theres no sizzle the oil isn't hot enough. cook util the under side is a goldern brown, then flip and continue cooking the second side. About 1-2 minutes per side. Place the cooked donuts on a paper towel lined plate to cool.

Roll them in sugar or spread your favorite homemade jam on top. Enjoy!

Almost 2 years! 2 years ago I had an 18 month old and we had just started live in foster care work. Now I have a 3.5 year old and an 8 week old, and we will be moving from California to Papua New Guinea in September.

Life has certainly changed. I will certainly be learning to more things from scratch, on purpose, and all the time, not just for fun.

These beauties are homemade hand pies filled with peach jam. I used the "Foolproof Double Crust Pie Crust" From the America's Test Kitchen Family Cookbook, and substituted butter for the shortening I didn't have. Following the recipe as is gave me 10-12 hand pies depending on the thickness I rolled to. I used a heaping spoonful of jam per pie, smashed the edges together with a fork, and baked for about 25 minutes at 350.

"Guideline" for my Peach jam, without pectin, best made when peaches are dirt cheap and you bought 40lbs because you could. mmmmmm. Peel and core a giant pot full of peaches. Add a lot of sugar. I probably used 6-7 cups of sugar (or more?) to 6 quarts of chopped peaches in an 8 quart stock pot. Simmer it down stirring regularly until it is nice and thick and the house smells wonderful. It's nice to have it done. I am also working on the quilt I started when pregnant with my daughter, who is now 20 months old.

My other news is that the girls I take care of want to sew, and one asked for a sewing machine for her birthday. Hopefully the hello kitty machine I just found on Craigslist is still available, she loves all things hello kitty.

I also have an official sewing room, and I'm working on making room for three to sew at the same time. Pictures to come soon! I am still unpacking from our move.

Thanks for stopping by!

So tonight's dinner was rather off the cuff. Pasta, meat and veggies, but how to pull those together?

Bring a large pot of water to boil.

1 lb frozen ground beef and 1 chopped onion into the dutch oven, on low with a little oil and water. Cover, and stir occasionally until cooked through.

In a very large saute/cast iron pan, cook 1 chopped onion, 5/6 chopped carrots, half a bunch of celery chopped, and several cloves of diced garlic in a little olive oil. Stir frequently, add salt to taste.
Add 1lb pasta(I grabbed some penne) to rapidly boiling h2o. Cook according to package directions.

When everything is cooked, dump everything into the big pot you made pasta in. Also add 1lb grated cheese(mozzarella) and 1 can condensed cream of mushroom soup(pretty much my secret ingredient for creamy cheesey sauce). Stir until the cheese is nice and melt-y and everything is all mixed up.

Serves 8 hungry adults when its the only thing on the table. Add salad and bread and your could probably feed 6-8 more people(if you force everyone to eat the salad).
A Recipe for Breakfast cookies:

Make cookies the night before. Manage not to eat all of them hot out of the oven. Send some to work with husband. Make tea. Place cookies on plate next to tea, and enjoy.

A Recipe for Oatmeal Chocolate chip cookies:

1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 tsp ground nutmeg OR 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon OR 1 tsp vanilla extract. Whatever floats your boat(but not all of these at once!)
2 sticks of butter softened
1 cup packed brown sugar
1 cup white sugar (granulated)
2 eggs
3 cups old fashioned rolled oats
1 1/2 cups chocolate chips OR raisens(but ewww) OR dried cranberries(my favorite)

Preheat the oven to 325, grab your baking sheets(2) and cover them in Parchment paper. Parchment paper is awesome because you cook in it, and can slide all your cookies off the tray onto the counter, without using a spatula and getting that sad folded cookie issue. You want parchment paper. Use it for this recipe please.

Mix flour, baking powder, salt, and nutmeg or cinnamon together in a mediumish bowl. If you opted to go with vanilla we add that to the wet ingredients.

In a large bowl (I use a 4.5 quart stand mixer), beat the butter and sugars together on medium speed until its looking fluffy. Add in the eggs one at a time(and vanilla if you want), until combined, scrape the beaters and sides of the bowl if needed.

On low speed slowly add the flour mix until combined. Mix in the oats and chocolate chips until combined.

Using a cookie scoop, or 2-3 tablespoons of dough at a time, roll the dough into balls, then flatten the cookie to about 1/2 to 3/4ths of 1 inch. Space your cookies about 2 inches apart.

Bake until edges are set(looking cooked and turning golden) and the middles are soft and puffy and not quite cooked looking. About 18 to 25 minutes, rotate your pans halfway through.

Cool the cookies on the pan for 10 minutes(this will finish cooking the centers but keep them soft and yummy), then slide the cookie covered parchment papers onto the counter to finish cooling, and go make batch 2! Now is also a good time to eat some.

Enjoy!

Why is my house not the first stop on your route today? It only takes about 30 minutes to get from the warehouse to my place(I should know, you couldn't deliver the tv 2 years ago, and we had to come get it), so why did you load my new camera at 5:46 am only to have me still waiting at 9:58 am? I even ran an errand, because we all know the best time to deliver a package is when someone is running errands.

Sir, I have a blog. My blog needs photos, which require the use of the camera sitting on your truck.

Today is my Christmas. Please hurry.

Sincerely,

Desperately waiting housewife.

P.S. Please do not wait til 5:03 pm to deliver. You would find me bumming because I have to time to play with the new toy.

That is all.

Can I get you some tea or hot chocolate? Sit down, have a cookie, and don't mind the mess.

I'm a bit old fashioned here, think Little House on the Prairie with a stand mixer(best Christmas present ever.) I cook from scratch(mostly) and I believe that food cooked with love tastes better than store bought every time. Feeding people is one of my love languages.

Let me introduce my family. I have a wonderful husband and beautiful 1 year old girl(StinkerBell). StinkerBell turned 1 all of 4 days ago, is walking, and has been walking since 9 months. She loves to help me cook, an awesome mommy baby time that happened way sooner than expected(and has nothing to do with teaching her the joy of licking the beaters, surely). My Hubby is awesome, works hard to provide for us, loves me and the StinkerBell, and loves my cooking. He also has a tendency to brag about his lunches to his coworkers. Which is weird and awesome.

Also living with us is a friend, C, and she is super fun and bubbly. She and her boyfriend also get packed lunches(best carpool arraignment ever), and they also brag to the coworkers(same coworkers as the hubby). Which leads to the awkwardness of having a celebrity status with an entire group of people I have never met.

Now that you know what I'm doing here, get ready for food. And crafts, and sewing, and nature, and cousins, and family, and nontraditional traditions, and maybe a little sarcasm.

Can I get you some more tea?
